The lake is calling. And so are the mountains.

Glaciers, mountains, and a lake—all in a single day—hardly any other region in the Alps can offer that. And you’ll be staying right in the middle of it all, right on the lakefront promenade.

🥾 Hiking & Peaks

The Schmittenhöhe is your local mountain: Take the mountain railway up, where panoramic trails await with views of more than 30 three-thousand-meter peaks—and head back down on foot or take a leisurely ride on the gondola. Want some more mountain air? The Kitzsteinhorn takes you up to 3,029 meters, even in summer.

🥾 Highlight: The Pinzgau Walk

One of the most beautiful high-altitude trails in the Eastern Alps—and it practically ends right here. You start early with the Schattberg Cable Car in Saalbach and hike all day at an altitude of around 2,000 meters along the Panoramarücken ridge until the Schmittenhöhe cable car takes you back down to Zell am See.

Don't be fooled by the name: This isn't exactly a "stroll," but it's technically easy—and it offers views of the Hohe Tauern, the Kitzsteinhorn, and Lake Zell that you won't soon forget.

  • Route: approximately 18 km from Saalbach (Schattberg) to Schmittenhöhe
  • Hiking time: about 6 to 6.5 hours, about 650 meters of elevation gain
  • Elevation: approximately 2,000 m throughout, highest point around 2,080 m
  • Important: There are no shelters along the way—be sure to bring enough food and water.
  • Directions: Take bus 680 to Saalbach—free with the Guest Mobility Ticket

💡 Our tip: Start your first ascent early, and you'll have the ridge all to yourself—and in the evening, the Seebar will be waiting for you.
